Programme Pete, the Harbour geek #1

In this exciting new section, Programme Pete, the Harbour Geek looks into programmes of the past:

Game: North Harbour v Western Province
Date: Sunday, April 1, 2.30pm, 1995
Price: Cost $3 (published by Sportz Graphics Limited)
Result: Not sure but since we did not win a Super 10 game that year, probably a close loss.
Cover: The cover has the mercurial Walter K Little in all his full glory. In this shot he exposes the weakness of the Otago backline in a game played earlier. Laulau is sporting the classic Nike sponsored jersey which was brought in around 1993/94. The sponsor logo of ASB Bank is prevalent as is the beloved hibiscus logo (long since shelved) and the Topsport Super 10 emblem.
The Vibe: After the departure of the Tegel chicken days and around 1994-ish the programmes got smaller and to be fair a lot better. These measure 210mm x 145mm and were glossy and generally well put together.
The Content: An article by the unfunny Grant Harding on how crap we were so far this season, sponsor’s message by a much younger looking Ralph Norris, curtain-raisers, team-sheets, your guide to referee’s signals and the all to familiar player profile.
Player Profile: Rob Grindlay (ECB) – Loosehead prop. Favourite meal: wait for it…Lisa’s lasagne. He was ok started at Glenfield then went to Bays which can only mean that he didn’t graduate high school with honours. A bit player, solid but nothing more.
Interesting Bits: The North Harbour Development Team contained quite a few players that went on to play for Harbour A: Adam Larkin, Mark Robinson, Ron Cribb, Malua Tipi, Tony Coughlan, Adrian Ferris, and Phil Weedon. There could be more but I don’t recognise them. This was the reasonably depressing time in our history when Chas Ferris took over from Brad and discreetly infiltrated the side with suspiciously large numbers of his own family. Sadly none of them were any good, Chas included.

3. M Ferris
4. I Jones
5. M Weedon
6. B Larsen
