Review 2004

Front row: Tony, Adrian, Joe, Roger, Mike and Tony
Reasonably good front row you would have to say in a general sense. Donald got dropped early on in favour of Noble but failed to go a full 80mins. Woodcock is obvious quality but I would be lying if I said he had an outstanding campaign because it was average. Coughlan got on once and awhile but never really dominated, probably need another good tight-head before I can sleep at night. The hookers were changed at regular intervals during each fixture except for the last one which we lost. Dustow is a good wee player but if Joe was captain (which he was) I think he should have played a complete game.
Overall 6/10

Middle row: Greg, Marty, Doug, Steve
You would have to say we have good strength in this position. Greg and Marty cemented themselves as excellent locks and got through a lot of hard graft. Greg suffered from injuries most of the season but his partner, Veale, toiled away week in, week out and was probably our best forward of the season. Steve Jackson arrived and did bugger all; how we can have a development manager that is a member of the NPC team I have no idea. He is obviously solid but lacks a presence on the field. Doug Fletcher looks to be a good player going forward and shows a bit of depth.
Overall 7/10

Back Row: Nick, Brent, Craig
Newby is not an openside flanker and whether he will stay in North Harbour is exceedingly doubtful. Given that he has an Otago solicitor acting for his inclusion in the Highlanders/Otago, the chances are slim that we will ever see him northside again. I personally couldn't give a shit. Brent Wilson had a very solid run in his first full season as the blindside and showed glimpses of his true ability. Nick Williams arrived and conquered in his debut season and may go very close to the Super 12, a fine start for a promising player.
Overall 6.5/10

Halfback: Billy, Ben and Jr.
The halfbacks were crap. The ball never got delivered on time and frankly I expect better from players who have be around for some length of time. Meyer and Fulton both are similar players which offered no variation when one is subbed. Myer delivers the ball slower than a one legged mule and Fulton isn't much better. Didn't see much of Junior to comment. Bring Back Allcock.
Overall 4/10

Fly-half: Luke, Tusi
Luke was the best back alongside the genius which is Rico Gear. After a shocker at Albany v Wellington he turned it on against the scum and other worthless opponents. He may have been guilty of doing a bit too much but has the goods to go all the way. Tusi has no goods and little ability, don't know why they like him, must be a good guitar player or something.
Overall 8/10 (Luke)

Centres: Anthony, Rico, Andrew, etc.
Good defence during the season but ran out of ideas on attack. Maybe Luke was doing too much. They all have obvious class but fail to consistently get it together when required. The frailties of yester-year have come back to haunt us. Sadly most will disappear around the country as the professional cloud hangs over the Harbour ready to display its awesome power.
Overall (6.5/10)

The Back Three: Nick, Rudi, Hosea
"Hosea was frighteningly good. He will probably move to Canterbury. Rudi attacked well, looked pretty quick, missed a few too many tackles. Rico didn't play much but carved up in the last couple of games" - 2003 Squad Review. Hosea is moving to Wellington, Nick is going to Otago, Rudi sucked and Rico is still the shinning light. We wait to see where the later will play next year, unlikely to be north of the bridge.

Administration:
New CEO and a slim administration team is all that remains from the Dougie years. Too early to say whether this new management has the ability to stop the Union sliding into the abyss, time will tell but I feel more confident than I did last year.
Overall 5.5/10

Coach: Polly and Anscombe
I was extremely worried about these ECB fellas but by and large the season wasn't too bad in patches. Sadly we needed to get into the semi-finals to ward off the Super 12 vultures. This didn't happen and they must be judged fairly by their eventual table position, which was poor. Polly can stay but Anscombe and his rolling maul that isn't, must be let off the bus.
Overall 5/10
