2003 State of the Union

Well, a bizarre season full bloody stop. Started like the perennial under-achievers the media believes we are, four great soul-searching wins on the trot, two avoidable losses to finish up and four completions points deducted.

Well you can't say life north of the bridge is unexciting, though you can say the performance of the Harbour Union as a whole has revealed some disturbing trends and practices.

Some general comments if you please:

First, why is it that we allow ourselves to feed on the "tag" that our average sporting media superimposes on us every season. Do we think so little of the game and the people involved that we must just accept unprofessional attitudes and mediocrity. Rolling over and taking it in the preverbal with a narrow but lengthy cleaning instrument is not the answer to bigger crowds, better performances and forward thinking management practices. Sooner or later Harbour has to take a stand and say no to average and embrace quality, the Board (when they take their tongues out of Dougie's unpleasant orifice) should have a good think at why they are here and it's not for the half-time hospitality and the crisp blazer. (in case they were wondering) For god's sake take a look and stop letting us down you fools.

Second, Harbour reeks of the unprofessional. We absolutely suck at administration and have the lowest profile in terms at being guardians of the game. The NZRU think we suck, the Harbour public is not impressed and our sponsors (did we have any) must be ready to support rhythmic gymnastics at the Beach Haven Scout and Guides Den, rather than pour money down the black hole that is Harbour Rugby. It is evident that heads must roll, whether it is Rollerson or members of the board, there must be a clear-out. Accountability, for Doug that can be simplified to mean "take it on the chin", must been seen to happen and transparency of this must be encouraged at all levels. Chadgate was a disgrace and someone must be held accountable. Otherwise no lessons will be learnt and they Harbour will continue in the eyes of the club's and the public to be remiss in the law of action and consequence.

Third, a positive slant. We uncovered some real talent this year, Gear, Wulf, Evans, Veale, Mailei have all been revelations and suitable reward for player development. Although we look to be losing the ineffective Larsen, "side-line Sam" (Ron Cribb) and the Flavanator. This could spell another "rebuilding" phase but hopefully the lessons learned in the past can be recognised and a good side can emerge from this debacle of a season.

To sum up:
1. For f*#ks sake get a strong administration in place.
2. Keep our promising players.
3. New coach.
4. Once and for all come up with a workable document to lay the future down for all to see.

Enjoy the RWC and see you next year.
